Rhino relocation, South Africa – ‘I rode along on the first convoy operated by  Rhinos Without Borders from Free State, South Africa, to the Okavango Delta – a 1500km journey with 15 rhinos– this was the largest transportation of rhinos ever attempted. The rhinos were owned by a Free State farmer whose farm had come under attack by poachers on a number of occasions. He decided that it was safer for the his family and the rhinos to have them relocated by Rhinos Without Borders to Botswana…’ words/images ©Jason Florio / Dodho Magazine

‘”It will be cheaper than taking the vehicle!” said Florio – pulling at our over-stretched  budget purse-strings – that clinched the deal!…Ebu, very convincingly, stated: “Come, we go now, now!… We will get to Kedougou in two hours… and I will also return tonight, to Mali, with a passenger from Kedougou too!”.  In actual fact, we would not reach Kedougou until 10pm that evening! If we had had even a hint that we would be on the back of those motorcycles for almost nine spine-juddering hours, not one of us would have been smiling, and joking, half as much as we did when we set off!’ Words by Helen Jones-Florio / River Gambia Expedition.

On a recent documentary assignment to Guyana and Zimbabwe – filming interviews with transgender, and LGBTI communities – being so open and free to be who you are is not an option. In fact, doing so can lead to arrest, prison, stigmatization, and discrimination… and, tragically, in some cases, being murdered.

Here’s to celebrating diversity and freedom
